How the Matildas Found Their Name

The name “Matildas” comes from a famous Australian folk song called “Waltzing Matilda.” This song is like an unofficial anthem of Australia and tells the story of a wanderer with his swag (a type of bedroll) named Matilda. Back in the mid-1990s, the team needed a nickname that would resonate with the Australian public and embody the spirit of the nation. They held a competition to find the perfect name, and “Matildas” was the winning choice. It’s a name that’s uniquely Australian and instantly recognizable. Just like the song, the Matildas represent the adventurous and resilient spirit of Australia.
