What Is a Culer?

Have you ever heard someone call themselves a “Culer” and wondered what that meant? If you’re a fan of FC Barcelona or just curious about why you hear Alexia Putellas or Keira Walsh saying “Hola, Culers” on Instagram Reels, you’re in the right place. Let’s get into the story behind this special term!

What Is a Culer?

A “Culer” (say it like koo-lehr) is a super fan of FC Barcelona, some of the most famous football teams in the world. But this isn’t just any fan name – it has a funny and interesting origin story!

Where Did It Come From?

We need to go back in time to the early 1900s. Imagine it’s a big football game day at FC Barcelona’s old stadium, called Les Corts. The stadium is packed with excited fans. Some of these fans are sitting in the top rows of the stands. From outside the stadium, people passing by could see their backsides poking over the edge of the stands.

In Catalan (little history lesson, Catalan is a language that people speak in a region called Catalonia. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia), “cul” means “bottom,” and “culer” came to mean “person with their bottom showing.” In English, while the direct translation is a bit silly, “culer” now means a devoted Barcelona fan. It’s a fun nod to the old days and a special way to identify Barcelona supporters.

How It Became Famous Worldwide

So, how did this funny word become known all over the world? As FC Barcelona became more and more famous, winning lots of games and trophies, their fans grew too. Starting with their men’s team with famous players like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and now it has grown more with the popularity and success of their women’s team, with Alexia Putellas and Maria “Mapi” Leon.

With so many people loving FC Barcelona, the word “culer” traveled far and wide. Now, whether you’re in Spain, the USA, Japan, or anywhere else, if you meet a Barcelona fan, they might proudly call themselves a culer.

Next time you hear someone say they’re a Culer, you’ll know they’re not just a fan of football – they’re a proud member of the FC Barcelona family. And now you know the fun story behind the name!

Here’s to all the Culers out there, the heart and soul of FC Barcelona! Go Barça! Go Culers!
