Imagine this… You wake up, pick up your phone, to read the news and the top headline is “USWNT Win World Cup in Stoppage Time!” If you’re new to watching football or just starting to play, you might be wondering what is stoppage time or noticed that sometimes the game goes on even after the clock hits 90 minutes. That extra time is called “stoppage time” or “injury time.” Let’s break it down!

What is Stoppage Time?

In football, the game is played in two halves of 45 minutes each, totaling 90 minutes. But the clock doesn’t stop for things like injuries, substitutions, field invaders, or other delays. Instead, the referee adds extra minutes at the end of each half to make up for lost time. This added time is known as stoppage time.

Why Do We Have Stoppage Time?

Stoppage time ensures that the game is fair by giving players the full amount of playing time despite any interruptions. Here are some common reasons stoppage time is added:

  1. Injuries: If a player gets hurt and needs medical attention, the game pauses. Stoppage time makes up for these pauses.
  2. Substitutions: When players are substituted, it takes time for them to leave and for new players to come on.
  3. Time-Wasting: Sometimes, players might intentionally take longer to do things (like a goalkeeper holding the ball too long, or players walking slowing off the field when being subbed off). Stoppage time accounts for this.
  4. Goal Celebrations: After a goal is scored, celebrations take time, so a bit of stoppage time is added for that too.
  5. VAR (Video Assistant Referee) Reviews: If the referee needs to review a play using VAR, it takes time and is added to stoppage time.

How is Stoppage Time Determined?

The referee is the one who keeps track of all the delays during the game. Near the end of each half, the referee decides how many extra minutes should be added. You’ll often see the fourth official on the sideline holding up a board showing how many minutes will be added.

Why is Stoppage Time Exciting?

Stoppage time can be one of the most thrilling parts of a football match! Here’s why:

  • Unexpected Goals: Teams often score important goals during stoppage time, changing the outcome of the game at the last minute.
  • Dramatic Finishes: The extra time can lead to intense and dramatic moments, with everyone on the edge of their seats.
  • Fair Play: It ensures the game is fair, giving both teams the full amount of playing time despite any interruptions.
